Profiles: Country Dairy
The Country Dairy farm dates back to 1907, when Andrew Van Gunst married Jane Grinwis and bought approximately 80 acres of property at the current site of Country Dairy. At that time, Andrew milked between 8 and 12 cows, maintained an orchard of cherries, and grew asparagus and potatoes. By 1968, Andrew's grandson, Wendell, expanded the herd from 30 to 100 cattle. Country Dairy expanded again in 1983 by adding a dairy processing plant. Currently, Country Dairy milks about 1,000 cows, processes milk, makes cheese, ice cream, and butter. It employs about 70 people, and in 2004, opened its first retail store. Country Dairy proudly claimed the top milking herd in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio for April, May, June, August of 2006. The dairy makes 23 different types of cheese, from a pepperoni and onion jack to a horseradish cheddar. Their milk includes strawberry and chocolate flavors. Ice cream is also in abundance, with 17 different flavors with bovine-like names, including Cowfetti, Tropicow, and Peanut 'Udder Bliss. Resources: Country Dairy. (2006). [online resource].
