Challenge on April 21.

Michigan Foodways Chef Challenge at Schoolcraft College

On April 21, Schoolcraft College’s technology-rich VisTaTech Center in Livonia hosted a unique, first-class chef competition including a strolling dinner with paired wine from Black Star Farms. Alexander Zonjic -- jazz flutist, Seldom Blues restaurant entrepreneur, and Smooth Jazz V98.7 morning show host -- will emcee.

The strolling dinner was created under the supervision of Aaron Cook, CEC, Executive Chef for Schoolcraft College’s VisTaTech Center. Guests chose from six food stations for a wide assortment of dining items ranging from top round of beef to Bavarian fried chicken to kielbasa. To celebrate Michigan Foodways, the dishes highlight Michigan ingredients and food traditions.

Black Star Farms provided wine to accompany Chef Aaron’s menu. The Suttons Bay winery consistently produces award-winning Michigan wines. David Koshizawa, Executive Chef, Asian Village, Detroit, won the competition amng four chefs who competed to craft a thoroughly Michigan meal.

Participating chefs include:

  • David Koshizawa, Executive Chef, Asian Village, Detroit (winner)
  • Chunyi Hou, Second-year student, Schoolcraft College
  • Jeff Mellas, Executive Chef, Portofino Restaurant, Wyandotte
  • Brandon Taylor, Sous Chef, Asian Village, Detroit

Celebrity judges who selected Koshizawa as the winner included Sylvia Rector, food writer for the Detroit Free Press, Shawn Loving, CEC, of Loving Spoonful, and Eric Villegas of Restaurant Villegas and Fork in the Road.

Proceeds from the event benefitted Michigan Humanities Council's development of the Michigan Foodways exhibit and Schoolcraft College.
