Profiles: The Jampot A well-known bakery in the Keweenaw is The Jampot, situated along M-26 between Eagle Harbor and Eagle River, next to Jacob's Falls. The bakery is operated by the Society of St. John, a monastery affiliated with the Ukrainian Catholic Church. The reputation for their baked goods and jams has spread via word of mouth: they are without a phone. Popular items include their thimbleberry jam (made with local thimbleberries), peanut butter-and-jelly brownies, muffins, and giant chocolate chip cookies. According to Hunt's Guide to Michigan's Upper Peninsula, "the pumpkin muffin, full of raisins and nuts and iced with lemon frosting, wins raves for its flavor and texture. Just one with milk and a piece of fresh fruit makes a good lunch." The Jampot's season is late April through mid-October. Products are available year round by mail order. The monastery was started in 1983 by three monks who located to the Keweenaw Peninslua from Detroit. Visitors are welcome to participate in Sunday mass (up to two hours long) at the nearby Holy Transfiguration Skete. References: Keranen, C. (2006).
